For friends and family

If you live with or care for somebody who has problems with drugs or alcohol, it can have a big impact on your life too – on your health and general wellbeing.

You may feel helpless or frightened to say or do anything, in case it just makes the problem worse. On top of that there are all the day-to-day practical problems to sort out, like paying the bills or making sure the person is eating healthily and looking after themself.

It might be a son or daughter, partner, parent another family member or anyone that you love or care for. Whoever it is, through our Family and Friends service, we will listen and support you, to help yourself and help them.

  • Our one-to-one sessions can help you explore the impact this issue has on your life.
  • In some areas we offer drop-in groups run by an experienced counsellor, where you’ll find that you’re not alone.
  • You'll find encouragement to look after yourself emotionally and physically, and get a deeper understanding of drug and alcohol misuse.
  • Our welfare rights workers can give you advice about claiming a carer’s allowance, and whether the person you are looking after is receiving the correct benefits.
  • We’ll also give you information about the services on offer for the person themselves, and how you might be able to encourage them to get help, however young or old they are.
