Mephedrone facts
How it affects you
- It’s a stimulant drug with similar effects to cocaine, amphetamine and ecstasy.
- The effects can come on in a head rush and be overpowering, which can make you feel sick - this is more likely if you've been drinking or smoking weed.
- The effects of a single dose can last for at least an hour, although some people report it going on for much longer.

Is it legal?
- Class B.
- Possession carries a maximum sentence of 5 years’ imprisonment.
- Trafficking carries a maximum sentence of 14 years’ imprisonment.
The risks, signs and symptoms
- There's a significant risk so mephedrone should be treated with caution. The risks are greater if you use large doses, take it for extended periods of time, or combine it with other drugs.
- The biggest risk is heart failure, so if you have an existing heart problem or high blood pressure, you should avoid using it.
- You should also avoid it if you take prescribed medication, as some of these may interact badly with mephedrone.
- Drugs such as mephedrone and ecstasy can occasionally cause death because of a direct toxic effect on the body.
- Like other stimulants, it can cause jaw clenching and teeth grinding which can damage your teeth.
- The comedown can make you feel exhausted, depressed, confused and disorientated, with a sore head. You won't be able to sleep properly after mephedrone.
How you can reduce the risks
- The only way to fully reduce the risks from mephedrone is to not take it.
