The Ipswich branch of NORCAS has now completed its pilot basic skills project, which ran from July through to November.
The service was very well received by local providers of other supporting services such as housing and probation and accumulated 24 referrals over approximately 20 weeks. The support provided by NORCAS consisted of identifying an activity type that would provide a means of developing learning potential or exploring new skills.
The Basic Skills Service offers access to providers of education, voluntary work or employment. The service also provides support to complete or compile C.Vs, forms and job searches by exploring options available and identifying or accessing activities that offer positive replacement strategies.
Successes have ranged from placing clients in voluntary positions, to supporting clients accessing education courses. A full report is currently being prepared outlining how effective this service has been and how instrumental members of the NORCAS team have been in working with clients to archive meaningful aftercare activities in the form of basic skills development.
