A variety of groups are benefiting from new NORCAS training courses.
As usual the training team is very busy with a range of different projects. Luckily therefore we have been able to increase our capacity of late as our new administrator, Donna, has received her own training and started providing short alcohol courses to a variety of audiences.
Recently, we have won tenders to provide Blood Borne Virus Awareness training and Safer Injecting training for the Norfolk Drug and Alcohol Action Team to add to the core courses we have provided for them for 10 years, including the very popular foundation course and overdose prevention session.
Currently, we are providing an Introduction to Dual Diagnosis course for the Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health Foundation Trust. Previously, we have been part of a partnership which provided a degree level course on the topic of substance misuse and mental health so we were well placed to provide this for the main statutory mental health service in the area. Feedback from the courses has been very good with many delegates asking for a longer session and one evaluation form said the trainer “was extremely effective, knowledgeable and interesting.”
A new venture for us is working with private schools to update their policies and offer training to their staff. Our youth team is then able to offer education sessions for the pupils knowing that there are supportive procedures and knowledgeable staff in place.
We have added a new accredited course to our service user course portfolio. The level 1 alcohol course is offered to prisoners at HMP Hollesley Bay prison and has been received well by those who have attended and 89% of delegates have gained the accreditation.
Several successes have come to light lately regarding ex service users who have attended our accredited befriender course, one has become a NORCAS trustee and another has become an NHS health trainer.
Our workplace service has had a very successful period working with the local branch of a multinational engineering firm. Time was spent consulting on their staff drug and alcohol policy which culminated in a full days training for the senior managers to finalise the policy and procedures. From this, one of the workers has come through the workplace service assessment system and will be having treatment in a three way working agreement with us shortly.
