Why does the person I care about take too many drugs or drink excessively?

Most folk take drugs or drink because it makes them feel good. Some people take drugs and drink daily in order to mask their true feelings and emotions…. it's a form of hiding.

How will I know if they are addicted or dependent on drugs or alcohol ?

The simple answer is you won’t. People who are dependant on drugs (and alcohol) are prone to become very devious and will lie about anything.

Can I make someone stop?

No.? It's pointless. Anyone MUST want to stop themselves.

What can I do to help?

  • Don't support behaviours that you disagree with or that are harming you or your family.
  • Don't subsidise the problem by giving the person you care about money.
  • Try to talk calmly about the drinking or drug taking… try to find out why they do it and get them to talk openly about it.?
  • Encourage them to seek help.
